Okay, so I was skeptical about this at first, especially because they were convinced it was a hoax over at joshspear.com, a site that I trust. But ever the curious cat, I decided to get the download (and for free), fully expecting my laptop to completely crash come the 10th of October. Well today's the tenth and I'm sitting here at work listening to my new Radiohead album. Hooray!
And now that I know it's not a hoax, I'm going to go back and lay down some money for it. Radiohead - I applaud you!

tig: Well, the Time magazine article I linked to in my post should have cleared your doubts early on. :)

Anyway it's nice to know you're giving them the cash they deserve.

anon: I'm sorry to hear that. Try again with your backup email account or email them for a new download link.

My original download link was not working, so I emailed them about it. Less than 3 hours later, they replied with a new one! I was then able to download the new album. See my post about it here.

Is the album only available to those who preordered?

On 11 October, 2007 07:29, Anonymous said...

ok so it took me about an hour to get through the website but it is so worth it. If the site does not work wait and try again later so worth it. I love radiohead for this.

I was getting this authentication signin whenever I went to inrainbows.com or any other link I could find that I thought MAYBE had something to do with downloading this album. With all my frustration a rainbow screen came up and I got to choose Download or Discbox. I chose download. Then the authentication box came up and I needed to signin again and when I went back all my pages required it too. So how the hell do I download this album?

I'm having the same problem getting onto inrainbows.com. It prompts me with a user name and password. I can't seem to find any other links to download it. Any help?

I'd really like to support Radiohead for releasing their album like this but I can't get onto their site probably cos it's overloaded or something so I've had to download it elsewhere. Hopefully it will be up again soon so I can donate some cash to them.

Ditto on the login... I guess it's my own fault for not pre-ordering.

On 11 October, 2007 08:32, Anonymous said...

Im getting it too... arrrghhhhh

On 11 October, 2007 08:34, Anonymous said...

this is probably their way of restricting access and load management... blocking people from getting in so they can get through their pre-order backlog. This is the first time anyone has done anything like this, and while we'd all like to think they'd know about server loads and the like.... we are talking about a rock band here. this login is their hosts solution to keep the network from crashing. think of it as the fire marshal or the bouncer keeping you out of the club untl some people clear out.

Everyone who are still having problems, check out some tips I've consolidated in a new post. Hope that helps.

Seriously, am I the only one who thinks they should build a site that is at least somewhat easy to navigate? After an hour of searching for a link to something other than the indiscernible inrainbows site to no avail. I wound up downloading it illegally with no way to give them money. I was willing to give 3.54 pounds ($5) but I have no way to do it.

On 12 October, 2007 01:24, tk said...

anon: I'm not too surprised that the site is down right now. If you're patient, it'll load after a few minutes. At least it did for me as I'm typing this. With major news outlets covering this, this was bound to happen.

Others who want to try this distribution route can actually learn from this experience. First, use a peer-to-peer distribution technology. Second, have a paypal/egold link handy for people to donate/give cash to you. Third, have a better site design. Since Radiohead looks like they've missed out on 2 out of 3 points, maybe someone could ask Radiohead if they have a paypal link?

I really, really wish they would have set up a few mirror sites. I've not been able to download the album 'cos the site is so busy. (Also, I'm not sure if I'll be able to because I'm at work and I think someone already downloaded it here ... I think it may recognise these computers as being the same, and the person who I think downloaded it isn't here at the moment ... ergh.)

On 12 October, 2007 12:55, tk said...

nick: Mirror sites probably wouldn't have helped as they could have had mirrors behind the scenes. I believe this is how large sites like Google does it.

Try downloading it now, the server is up and running fine. :)

Call me cynical, but I didn't like the fact that in order to buy the download you were forced to register permanently, and there was no opt out from receiving promotional mailings - no such thing as a free lunch as the old cliche says... add to the thus generated mailing list the enormous amount of publicity generated, I think it was not born from generosity but quite a clever marketing strategy.

If they really want the moral high ground they seem to be trying to hog, must try harder...

But then I should add that, while rating some of their music, I'm not a Radiohead fan proper.

You could always use a disposable email address, like this one here.

For what it's worth, I haven't received a single unsolicited email from them. Also consider the viewpoint of "proper" Radiohead fans and I think you'll agree that these fans would view this as a convenient update service. (well, if they send email when they release a new album.)
