Free: Simple File Shredder, Kill Disk, Poster Forge, mRemote, OutTwit, Alien Arena, Remember the Milk, Blummy

3 comments Backlinks

To make up for , there's a bumper harvest for today. :)

Simple File Shredder and Kill Disk

Christopher Null @ Yahoo answers a reader's question about deleted files in a post titled . In it, he mentions several wiping programs and of course only the free ones are highlighted here. :)

The first one is . Simple File Shredder wipes deleted files from your harddisk and prevents these files from being retrieved using file recovery programs. Simply select a file to shred and Simple File Shredder will erase all existence of it. You should be aware that the company that made Simple File Shredder, Scar5, doesn't appear to be in existence any longer.

Active@ Kill Disk
The second one that was mentioned is . Kill Disk differs from Simple File Shredder as Kill Disk is non-selective and wipes all deleted files from your harddisk. It can also wipe an entire partition or harddisk. A situation where this may come in handy is when you're selling off your harddisk, as your private data cannot be recovered by others.

Poster Forge

Poster Forge
is an easy-to-use software that allows you to quickly create (de)motivational, movie or "Wanted" posters. With a simple point-and-click interface, new posters can be generated with little effort. Perfect for late night creation.

allows you to manage all your remote connections in a single place. Currently it supports the RDP, VNC, SSH2 and Telnet protocols. The main intention is to have a central place to store all your connections and access them in the same window.

It's in beta now, so you should be careful of pesky bugs, if any.

is the offspring of Microsoft Outlook and . By installing OutTwit, Outlook will gain the ability to download Twitter messages as if they're emails. A godsend if you're a hardcore Outlook user or to fool your boss into thinking you're hard at work. Just a word of caution: OutTwit is still in alpha, so it may do bad things to your computer.

Alien Arena

Alien Arena
is a free FPS that recently got bumped up to version 6.10. Based on the Quake 2 engine, Alien Arena is focused on online play rather than solo missions. recently reviewed it and gave it two thumbs up. Comes in Windows and Linux flavors.

Remember the Milk

Remember the Milk If you're constantly forgetting the little things like buying milk for the baby, is for you. An online task manager, Remember the Milk helps keep your life in order by organizing, managing and locating your tasks as well as reminding you when they should be done. Apparently users like their milk on time as Remember the Milk was recently by LifeHacker users. To milk Remember the Milk for all it's worth, see .

has a nice list of bookmarklets to speed up your day. However, the real gem among all the links is . The idea behind Blummy is simple - it consolidates all your bookmarklets into a single link (Blummy) that you can bookmark or drag to your toolbar. Need a bookmarklet? Just click the Blummy link you bookmarked and all your blummlets (bookmarklets) will appear. The only downside is you'll need to register for a Blummy account (free) if you don't want your Blummy to expire.

Hope you enjoy today's freebies. This was one of the longest freebie post I've worked on so far.

iPhoneSIMFree: First 1.1.1 Sim Software Unlock! Works for Bricked iPhones!

Comments Backlinks

Great news for everyone with a bricked/hacked iPhone! Hot on the heels of that was just announced yesterday, ! Edit: and looks like it works. ***IMPORTANT:*** It seems that !

SimFree v1.6 relies on the 1.1.1 jailbreak that was developed by the iPhone Dev Team, so you shouldn't need to wait too long for a free software unlock. According to , this is what SimFree is capable of:

  • iPhoneSimFree Unlock works on ALL versions of iPhone (1.0.0, 1.0.1, 1.0.2, 1.1.1)
  • iPhoneSimFree Unlock works on ALL versions of Modem Firmware ( even the latest 04.01.13_G )
  • iPhoneSimFree Unlocked phones can be updated from any version to 1.1.1 safely without bricking your radio and GSM functions (unlike other unlock methods)
  • iPhoneSimFree does not patch your devices firmware ( unlike other unlocking methods )
  • iPhoneSimFree can FIX all phones that anySim and iUnlock bricked with the 1.1.1 update
  • iPhoneSimFree Unlock is restore and update resistant up to and including 1.1.1

From the looks of it, it looks like may have been on purpose (since SimFree v1.6 is able to reverse the effects) or Apple simply neglected to fix it even though potential bricking was hinted at. I wonder how this would fare with iPhone fanboys loyalists customers.

UPDATE: The iPhone Dev Team are ! Free unlocking for 1.1.1 may be on the horizon!

***UPDATE:*** is out! Works for new 1.0.2/1.1.1 iPhones!

If you prefer to stick to 1.0.2, click or for tutorials on how to downgrade your firmware and baseband (cell radio). This will fully downgrade your iPhone to 1.0.2 and allow calls to be made as well.

Tips for Downloading In Rainbows

Comments Backlinks

In Rainbows Some people are facing a bit of trouble with their In Rainbows download and have been requesting for help. Well as someone , I can assure you that you're not the only one (do I hear sighs of relief?) and sometimes it's not really your fault. If you haven't ordered your download yet, try . Otherwise, here are some tips for coaxing the In Rainbows download into your harddisk.

  • If you haven't received your email, check your spam folder. Many email accounts, whether free or paid, have a bulk/spam folder. Mail considered to be spam will sometimes be automatically be moved into that folder. What you're looking for is email sent by (replace AT with @). If you can't find any email from them, I guess you just have to be patient. :)

  • Download at an offpeak period. Just 4 - 5 hours ago, there were reports of a password being required to access the site. This was probably enforced to reduce the amount of traffic on the server. However, while writing this post, I had no problem entering the site, adding the download and reaching the new user screen. (I stopped there since I had no intention of contributing to the problem.)

  • Download the zip file normally with your browser, don't use a download accelerator. Download accelerators send multiple requests to the server in order to speed up your downloads. This could be viewed by the server as multiple attempts to download In Rainbows, especially if you have a dynamic IP address.

  • If your download stalls and you can't re-download the file, contact (replace AT with @). They will reply with a new download link for you to try out. From their replies, it looks like real, live people are manning the support email. So you have to be patient. For me, . And if you're lucky, you'll get 2 replies instead of one. (I just received another email from them 6 hours ago with yet another download link. Thanks guys, the first reply you sent worked well.)

If you have tips for your fellow Radiohead fans, feel free to chime in.

Free 100MB Remote Drive

What does this mean? It means you can use your favorite file manager, eg. Windows Explorer to transfer files! Plus you can also share the drive with your friends. The best part is it works with Windows, Mac OS and Linux. Now that's something you don't see everyday. It's a pity SSL starts at $1/month.

Rubicon screenshot is an ad network aggregator (that's the best description I could come up with). What it does is that it connects 300+ different ad networks to you. How does Rubicon help you? Well watch to see how you could further optimize your website and earn mad cash with Rubicon. The basic idea is that Rubicon can determine which ad would net you the most revenue for a particular visitor. The objective of Blog Action Day is to get bloggers to blog about a single topic and this year's topic happens to be about the environment. There are 3 different ways to get involved - , or - and I've managed to nail all three of them with this single post! Any one of them is sufficient to get your blog listed, so fulfilling all 3 really is just an overkill but very much appreciated, I'm sure. :)

First, see this...

Rationalize like a pirate day

3 New iPhone "switch" Ads

Comments Backlinks

The new iPhone "switch" commercials. The first one is titled Doug “Mankind”, followed by Elliot “Meredith” and finally wrapping things up with Stephano “One Thing”. Similar to Apple's switch ads for the Mac, except there's no PC here. I suppose you could consider every other phone to be on the other end of the ring.

I like how the ads have an impromptu feel to them with the guys packing up at the end of each ad. They may tout the iPhone as the greatest phone thing since sliced bread, but I could easily see how that could end up...

"Hey Doug, I've got great news. I'm off to Europe to start a family. (Commence 4 min message about meeting a girl)... Oh by the way, call me back today if you want your money back." - Jim.

"Elliot, the iPhone is great. I absolutely love it! Thanks! And One More Thing, I know your phone saved my ass once but you've been treating it better than me." - Elliot's fiancee.

"Mr Stephano, we're very sorry about your phone. Rest assured that your insurance will cover the full cost of the phone. However, our records indicate these were bought with your credit card..." - Stephano's bank.

Howto: Glowing Mountain Dew and Teeth Whitener

Comments Backlinks

Looks convincing? But did you really think that was how you could make glow-in-the-dark mountain dew? That's only if you blinked your eyes during the 29th second (scene cut) and again during 0:38 - 0:40, where he takes his hands off the mountain dew bottle. But what would really happen if you did try that out? Or what does that actually net you?

Turns out while that wouldn't result in glowing mountain dew, your teeth would be glowing. Yup, that is a . Add some hydrogen peroxide to baking soda and brush to get some glowing white teeth. That wasn't so bad after all, at least you learned something useful because you came here. :)

As for how you could create the glow-in-the-dark mountain dew, try dissecting some glow sticks and pouring the liquid in slowly. Shake it to get the desired glowing effect. Drinking from the bottle after that is definitely a bad idea.

Free Networking Ebook, Rescue LiveCD and 5 Sites to Watch Free Movies Online

Comments Backlinks

After yesterday's disastrous where I promised to keep it short and failed miserably, I return today refreshed and willing to give short posts another try. :) On another note, regular readers of my feed may have noticed I turned on summary feeds yesterday in an attempt to prevent others from simply regurgitating content from my feed on their sites. I'm not sure if there's any way around this at the moment. Anyway enough about that, and let's get on to the free stuff. :)

Free networking Ebook
Free networking Ebook The authors have decided to because it didn't garner enough sales to warrant an update. This doesn't necessarily mean it's bad (they claim to have gotten great reviews for it), though it's quite outdated since it's from 2004. As they admit, coverage on WPA/WPA2 is limited and the successor to 802.11g, 802.11n, isn't talked about in the book. Unless you're a network professional (in which case you should be buying your books), this shouldn't matter that much. At worst you could show it off to your grandkids to explain how things were done in the past. :)

Free rescue LiveCD
SystemRescueCd is a bootable Linux-based CD that allows you to rescue your system from hell. Equipped with many useful utilities such as GParted, NTFS read/write support via Ntfs3g, Clam-AntiVirus, network tools and more, SystemRescueCd can revive not just Linux systems but also computers running Windows. Of course some idea of what you want to do before popping in the CD is recommended, although SystemRescueCd does pack a lot of graphical programs. If you're looking for a free rescue LiveCD (bootable CD), SystemRescueCd may be the one for you.

5 sites to Watch Free Movies Online
I wrote about a few posts ago. Now I shall return with even more sites (5 in fact) to watch movies online for free.

The Open Video Project The aims to store digital video for researchers to use. Browsing around, I found mostly documentaries, lectures and science related videos. Videos are available for download only; I didn't see any videos embedded at the site. If you're into science, astronomy and all that, this site is for you.

, , and all allow you to watch free movies online. Like many other sites, they do not host the videos and simply collect the videos that are posted on video hosting sites. This means links can go down at anytime and what you can watch depends on what's uploaded at the video hosting sites. In addition, you should be aware that these 4 sites walk along the gray areas of the law. That being said, Vdo 4 Free deserves a special mention for having a large collection that includes TV shows, anime and more.

Bonus freebie: - Direct download:

And that sums up today's post. Comments?
